Preview: Release Released! Sunday
Nights @ The Nightingale, Birmingham
This Sunday, (8th. February), marks the re-opening of Release, Andy
Farley's new weekly club night / post gig party, which he's putting
on with fellow DJ residents Sarah G. and Si Griffiths in Birmingham.
As it's the 2004 Opening, and in true party spirit, they've decided
to make entry FREE!
I recall having a discussion on Harder Faster not long ago with
someone about the difference between a "venue", a "club"
and a "party", and wondered why in London lots of clubs
are called parties. In many cases that doesn't seem very appropriate,
especially when clubs get big and commercial. However, Release is
really best described as a party - end of the weekend where Andy
and mates play a variety of quality dance music from tribal through
tech house to techno, and covering, as they see fit and feel inclined,
everything in between. In some sense this is quite a remarkable
event, as this is just what lots of kids do at the weekend - have
a party, and get on the decks with mates. That Farley wants to do
this having been playing all over the country, (he's playing a God's
Kitchen event in Liverpool, and Afters in Birmingham this weekend)
is probably a testament to the kid in him, and to the fact that
international fame, (he's just come back from a tour of Australia),
hasn't dulled his enthusiasm for the scene nor has he lost his understanding
of what it's all about.
The name of the club, Release, is also quite appropriate. It's for
those who are Released from the pre-conceptions of what Andy Farley
plays, (i.e. Andy Farley = Hard House, NOT!, well not at Release).
The closest thing to which I can liken the style of the music is
Trade as it used to be a few years ago, but such comparisons are
odious to some and perhaps irrelevant. It is and will be quality
dance music played by experts out to have a fun time. If you can
handle that then Release is very likely to be one party you won't
want to end.

Reviews: Convergence @ Egg, and Hardware @ The Office,
London, Saturday January 31st 2004
by Camden Nurse
Five non - clubbing friends + the biggest hard dance event = carnage
(for the friends at least).
Since starting 4years a go, Convergence (from that almighty Frantic
Crew), has seen many a venues to call it’s own, but with Egg
being it’s current resting place, it’s well worth the
15minute walk from King's Cross station (time dependant on how fast
/ slow you walk).
Reassuringly clean toilets, and yet another confusing, yet exciting
venue layout, gave us 3 rooms of hard, bouncing, classic and stomping
tune - age! Bring it on! An all round thumbs up displayed by the
giant beams on customers' faces, as the night showed no signs of
stopping. It is easy to see that paying £20 on the door, £12
in advance and £10 on guest list can be justified, after all,
Frantic has all the ingredients; it's what you make it, so shut
up, and dance!
Glazby, Donna Birt, Ali Wilson, and Shaf De Bass were among the
talent to entertain the strong crowd, keeping them on their toes
throughout, whilst everyone’s favourite Thirsty DJs, took
their well deserved place in the top room, providing us with chunky,
funky sounds of the funky house beats. Satisfaction – you
bet!
Despite the crowds of clubbers on each level, it was both possible
and easy to move around and a constant flow of people running from
each room showed a huge amount of indecisiveness as to which room
was the best to socialise / dance / drink in… it was such
a close call – just the way we like it! Drinks were priced
averagely (comparing to other London venues), and no shots or wine
served in the ‘funky room’, meant another chance to
stroll downstairs and bump into those you hadn’t seen in a
while (or since last weekend at least).
So, 3 of the non - clubbing friends went home in a £70 taxi
at about 3 am, the other 2 stayed until the end and stood shivering
in the train station (well done though guys, you made it!), and
the rest decided to go in any way shape or form over to Frantic’s
new after party Hardware at The Office (many listening to Gorfy
on the radio 107.4 as they went), and my, my, what a treat they
had in store: Elgreko, BK, Guffy, Donna Birt, Danny Gilligan, Shaf,
and Lucy Fur, ‘Oh, Mr. P, you're spoiling us!’, and
free before 8am, what is the world coming to?!
Okay, so many found it hard to stand up, dance or even communicate
but it didn’t stop the numbers from stepping through the door,
looking around and ‘having it!’ in any way they were
able to display (all clean, of course).
For many that remember Frantic’s good ‘ole days of Provocation,
they were memories to be cherished, but by the turn out and effort
put into Hardware, it sure showed that history could be repeated,
and just as much fun could be had.
After a long weekend of wreckage and exhausting antics for many,
whilst driving / train –ing / walking / ski - ing/ home, you
cannot help but wonder how Frantic do it. Despite the praise, the
critics, the competition, they always pull in a crowd, have a bloody
good line up, and have supporters from all over. So, if Frantic
are ‘too commercial’ or whatever phrase you may choose
to criticise them with, why on earth do they provide a constant,
successful party for all, and show that the brains behind it all,
is always one step ahead?

FRANTIC, Camden Palace, London
We have been told that the Camden Palace is likely to stop trading
as a club at the end of February and as a result we sadly announce
what is likely to be our last parties at the Palace.
Our first ever party at Camden Palace was back in April 1999 when
the queue stretched from the front doors round the block and back
again with 2000 people already inside and 1500 desperately trying
to buy tickets.
Since then Camden Palace has turned into our spiritual home with
over 70 events being held during the Daytime, Nighttime,Saturdays,
Sundays and Bank Holidays!
We have had some immense parties and some special memories at our
2nd home and too many to mention but some that have stuck in our
mind have been the following:
*Laboratory: A party dedicated to Lab 4!
*The 1st ever Timeless!
*The 4th
Birthday Celebrations!
*Moving the decks from the booth and onto the stage.
*Tidy vs. Nukleuz!
We are holding 2 last parties so we can play the biggest range of
our favourite DJs possible and because we know that not everybody
will be able to make the first party in January. Come and say goodbye
to the Palace at the last ever Frantic parties? at the legendary
venue!
Feb 14th - FRANTIC VALENTINES BALL
Our last ever event at Camden Palace?
It's only fitting that our love affair with Camden Palace finishes
with the Frantic Valentines Ball. Frantic are pulling together 6
of our favourite DJs, 3 Boys and 3 Girls to go head to head to claim
the Valentines Ball Crown for one last time at Camden Palace?
Lisa Pin-Up / Ed Real b2b *Surprise Guest* / Donna Birt / Guffy
/ Lucy Fur / Danny Gilligan / The *Ting* & many more!
Tickets for both these events are priced at: £10 Members £12
Non Members
The £10 paying guest list for the event is now open. As these
are our last parties at Camden Palace the guest list will fill up
very quickly. We STRONGLY advise you to secure your places as soon
as possible.
