Review: Trade @ Turnmills

I can't rhapsodise enough about Trade this month. Finally, after two years of searching for a new music policy during which time we have been taken on excursions through electro, whacky techno, and bog-standard hard house classics, Trade has finally decided that it weren't broke in the first place! Out with the new and in with the old, and I for one say thank god for that.

Welcome to the new star of hard dance music at Trade: BK. Yes BK. What an amazing, blindingly energising set that was from the guy who had been forced to play hard house classics over the past few months. It felt like finally someone had said "OK, let's see what you can do" and off he went, with a tour de force demo of why the "Big Names" are Big! Over the past few months I have been frequently reminded why people like Ian M, Andy Farley and BK retain their reputations. It's because they can create and sustain an energy, and generally play sounds which aspiring DJs just can't. Farley did it for me again the other week at Afters. BK did it again for me at Trade.

But Trade has also improved their music policy by resurrecting their Test Lounge, their third room, playing harder sounds earlier in the night. Those who want it hard from the start can, if they so chose, skip the wonderful build up provided by Malcolm Duffy, and dive straight into the hard driving sounds of the Test Lounge. Or of course, there's also the more laid back beats of the Light Lounge for those at the other end of the spectrum.

The later door opening time (5:30) seemed to work reasonably well in helping avoid the wait outside, though there's still a build up in the penned off half of the club for the first hour until the main room opens.

Overall, this was the Trade sound as I remember it - not old tunes, but the old musical energy was right back there, exactly as it was and as I hope it will continue to be. For those who've yet to experience Trade go to the next one and you'll get a sense of what the music used to be like. For those who haven't been for a while, well all I can say is go to the next one 'cos Trade is back like it's never been away.

Review: Ricochet @ Egg

Yet another storming party from Chris and Paul at Ricochet, which is being billed as the official Trade after-party. Certainly quite a few people went from Trade, but many went there from elsewhere or just to it in its own right, so that Ricochet certainly felt like it was its own party rather than the continuation of someone else's. Great bouncy chunky music but basically really nice and friendly people having a great time. Strongly recommended.

2Klub Newsletter: Break

Gonna take a wee break in the newsletter for the next week or two as I'm off to the Middle East. No, I'm not on a mission to put E in the region's water-supply in an attempt to induce world peace, though the thought did occur to me. Will let you know if anything interesting happens when I get back sometime in May... hopefully in one piece. In the meantime, have fun clubbing and let me know what you're up to.
